How to Use the Learning Management System

Here is some general information about accessing and using the courseware which is presented by the Learning Management System (LMS).

Cannot Find the Student Center and Forums

The LER Student Center and Forums live on the Ning website and are accessed by invitation only. You should receive a Ning Student Center invitation at the same time as your Welcome Letter to the Lactation Consultant Training Program (LCTP) for those enrolled in the Enriched or Core training program. Those enrolled in the Exam Review Course or Continuing Education courses will also receive an emailed invitation shortly after enrolling in your first course. If you do not have an invitation, please check your junk mail file as some email clients may send the invitation to your junk folder. If you do not have an invitation and would like one, please send us an email to administrator@leron-line.com requesting an invitation. If you have already accepted your invitation and joined us at the Student Center, you can return via this link http://lactation.ning.com/

Video Won't Mark Complete

All of the videos are scheduled to time out after 90 minutes.  To have a video mark complete the Learning Management System (LMS) needs to have a response from the viewer to the Viewer Statement at the very end of the video within 90 minutes.  After that even if you answer the question the LMS will not record your answer as it has timed out.  It is important that you answer the Viewer Statement question at the very end of the video, click Done and then wait for the next window to come up to 'Send' and register the response.

Also, it has come to our attention that certain versions of Adobe Flash Player create a problem with the video not marking complete. The Viewer Statement comes up, the student answers affirmatively, they click 'Done' but the screen to 'Send' does not come up and the video does not mark complete. If that occurs please follow this link to download and install a newer version of Adobe Flash Player. http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ You do not have to install the Google toolbar so you can uncheck that box. After installing an updated Flash Player, you do not have to watch the video again.  Please sign in to the course and the video, choose the last chapter on the table of contents, move the scroll bar at the bottom to just before the end of the video, click the play arrow and wait for the Viewer Statement to come up.  Click 'I have viewed the entire video', click Done, click Send.  Then your video segment will mark complete.
Of course all sections of the class will have to be completed before the LMS will mark the course complete.

Can't Read the Powerpoint PDF Printout

The powerpoint pdf printout of the lecture is available on each course in your Training Plan. In an effort to save ink and paper they are in 6 per page format. As the type in some of the slides is then too small to read or print we also make the powerpoint printout available as a 2 per page pdf file which is larger, but takes more paper and ink. The 2 per page pdf link is in your Welcome Letter and here http://www.leron-line.com/LC_Training_pdfs.htm This will take you to a zipped file which you can download, unzip and print out. It is zipped because it is too large to send through email. You may need decompression software to unzip this file if it is not already available on your computer. You can get decompression software from C-Net at Winzip, Winrar, or IZarc. There are reviews on C-Net, you can take your choice.

Clinical Skills Workshop Video Stops and Starts

Unfortunately the local computer is not like a TV set that basically all display data in the same way. There are many reasons why streaming video may stop and start including connection speed, hard drive space available to write buffered data, buffer size, CPU speed and usage, old flash player versions, server speed, video card quality and others. The server is sending a stream of data which the local computer stores away until the local computer buffer has filled sufficiently to start playing the movie. Then the movie starts playing. If the buffer does not or cannot fill fast enough, the movie will stop until the buffer fills again. If your local computer starts and stops while playing a movie, the easiest solution may be to start the movie, press the pause key on the control bar under the movie (the button with the two vertical bars is the pause button) and wait while the buffer fills. You can do something else for awhile (a couple minutes should probably be enough) and then press the pause button again to start your movie. This should provide a reasonable viewing experience. As these are all Flash movies, the first action to take is to make sure that you have the latest Adobe Flash Player installed on your machine. Follow this link to update your Flash Player http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ You do not need to install the Google Toolbar so you can uncheck that box.

Browser Choice
Do not use the Google Chrome browser with these courses. We have had numerous reports of problems from students using the Google Chrome browser. Our recommendtation is to download, install and use the Mozilla Firefox browser available here

iPad and iPhone
Our courses are built upon Adobe Flash video technology, the most widely used video format on the web as used by YouTube and other video sites. Apple has chosen not to make their iDevices compatible with Flash. Although there are apps available to allow iDevices to show flash video such as Photon available here, we do not support these. MAC's do have Flash support and are compatible with our courses.
